50 Years Later
Fifty years ago this very day, March 5, 1967, a tornado ripped through a narrow swath of the city causing millions of dollars in damage. Unfortunately, our church was part of that damage.
Bro. Steve Thomas, who was the preacher at that time, was hit by a piece of glass, but suffered minor cuts. The new sanctuary, at that time,
was being built, later to be dedicated in 1968. Some of the businesses that sustained major damage was K-Mart, Piggly Wiggly and most notably, the Sunset Drive-In, whose screen could topple with a heavy gust of wind.
Bro. Ken Livingston's childhood home, located just one block east of the church sustained a lot of damage. But we
were all safe. The church sanctuary continued being built, homes and businesses continued being repaired.
Although there are no physical traces of the storm, mental images still flood our minds. God is good and kept all of us safe that night. To God be the Glory for his love and watch care over us when tragedy strikes.
